Fasting is a voluntary action by abstaining from food , drink , or both , and the bad deeds of all the things that break the fast for a certain period of time . Absolute fasting is usually defined as abstinence from all food and liquid for a defined period, usually one day ( 24 hours ) , or several days . Fasting others may only partially limit , restrict certain foods or substances . Fasting practices may preclude sexual and other activities as well as food .
In Islam , fasting ( sawm also called ) , performed for a full month , the month of Ramadan and closed with Lebaran , refrain from eating and drinking and of all acts that may break the fast as deeds that are not included in either the words , do not fight , keeping the mindset , lust , and also to exercise patience , from dawn until sunset with intent . Following the instruction of the Muslims holy book the Quran fasting also help cultivate a good attitude . And all of it is expected to continue into the following months , and not just in the month of fasting .
